The automated system for detection of people in water-developed under subactivity 3.1, was tested last week in waters near Gijón (Spain).
The subactivity leader, Néstor Perales and Gracia Albuquerque bravely volunteered as “Men over board” under harsh Cantabrical Sea conditions.
After jumping from Sasemar vessel Salvamar Rígel, they remained on the sea for hours while the infrared camera installed on a Sasemar helicopter was recording and collecting images in order to keep on improving the software. The third target was a heated dummy; a prototype that is being developed by Jesús Loza, from Jovellanos Centre.
This system –or robot- uses high sensitive infrared cameras that will allow an automated detection of castaways or small objects at sea even at night.
